How to read this sheet
- 漢字 kanji
- Characters borrowed from Chinese that carry meaning. One character can have several readings depending on the word.
- ひらがな hiragana
- The core Japanese syllabary. Every word can be written in hiragana — it also shows you exactly how the kanji is pronounced.
- カタカナ katakana
- The angular syllabary used for loanwords (パン, バス), emphasis and many animal or science terms.
- romaji
- Latin-alphabet transcription (Hepburn style) — a pronunciation guide while your kana is still warming up.
